CHARIS CREATIONS
Bringing Image to Life
What to Wear
The camera sees what the eye misses. Fabrics that shimmer beautifully under a chandelier can blow out under flash. Patterns that look subtle to the eye compete with faces in a photograph. Colour choices that seem neutral on the hanger shift dramatically against outdoor light. This guide helps you choose what will look extraordinary in both worlds.
Colours That Photograph Well
✓ Excellent
Ivory, champagne, dusty rose, sage green, navy, burgundy, rust, terracotta, warm taupe
◎ Good with Care
Blush, soft lilac, warm grey, deep forest green, caramel brown
✕ Avoid if Possible
Neon orange, neon yellow, neon green, these colours shift badly under both flash and natural light
⚠ Use With Caution
Bright white (can overexpose), pure black (loses detail), very pale mint (looks grey)
Fabrics, What the Camera Loves and Hates
✨
Matte and Flowing Fabrics
The camera's favourite
Chiffon, crepe, georgette, organza, tulle, linen, silk matte, these fabrics move beautifully and hold colour consistently. They photograph the same way they look in real life. Outdoor light and flash both treat them well.
✓ Always a safe choice. Choose these whenever possible.
⚠️
Highly Reflective Fabrics
Beautiful in person, difficult on camera
Satin, sequins, heavily beaded fabrics, metallic lace, and mirror-embroidered materials can reflect light so intensely that detail disappears entirely. They may look stunning in the room but read as white blobs in photographs. This is not a failure of the photographer, it is physics.
⚠ If your outfit has heavy beading: tell us. We will position our lighting to minimise blow-out.
🧵
Lace and Embroidery
Usually stunning, with one exception
Lace and intricate embroidery are among the most photogenic elements anyone can wear. The detail is captured beautifully in close-up detail shots. The exception: extremely fine mesh-on-mesh lace against skin tones that closely match the lace colour, this can disappear in certain light conditions.
✓ Ask us to do a test close-up shot early on to confirm it is reading correctly.
The Quick Rules
✓ Do
✕ Don't
